G. Modiano Ltd. is one of the world's pre-eminent wool traders and processors. The company traces its origin back to 1875, although the company which exists today was founded by Jo (Giuseppe) Modiano in 1957, since when it has become the largest producer of wool tops in the world.
We buy greasy wool in the main producer countries of the world, have it shipped to our mill in Nejdek, Czech Republic, where it is scoured and combed to produce a top, the semi-processed input required by a spinner to produce yarn.
Every single lot of greasy wool is assessed at least three times by our teams of experienced buyers and checked once again in the mill before processing.
Depending on the spinner, yarns have a variety of end-uses: weaving, flat and circular knitwear, hand-knitting, hosiery and upholstery. The by-product of combing, known as the noil, is used in the production of yarns, felts and stuffings.
Nejdek Wool Combing (Nejdecka Cesarna Vlny or NCV) a.s. was established in 1995, in the wake of the Velvet Revolution, although the woollen mill was first established on the site in 1846 with the introduction of a water turbine in the River Rolava. An important and modern textile plant was developed in 1910, with further reconstruction taking place between 1968 and 1974. Today NCV is one of the most modern wool scouring and combing mills in the world, consisting of 80,000 m2 of covered area and a capacity of 23 million kgs per annum (basis top & noil) and plans to develop this further. There are also two superwash lines to apply Hercosett (TEC shrink-resist) and Basolan (soft handle) treatments. The mill is accredited with the EU Flower and OEKO-TEX 100 and runs a state-of-the-art effluent treatment plant. Discover the amazing journey of wool from the farm in Australia right through the global supply chain to create innovative wool fabrics and garments
We sell greasy wool, wool tops (including Hercosett and Basolan), noils and wastes (raw and carbonised) and wool grease. Our wools cover a wide range of individual types, including fleeces and pieces, from 12 to 36 microns, and length from 50 to 100 HM. We can also cut tops from 25 to 150 mm.

G. Modiano Ltd. is an international business and major player in the global wool trade. We are proud of our business and our contribution to wool. The reputation of our industry is critical to its continuing strength, and we pride ourselves in ensuring best practice in every area of our business; from caring for our staff to campaigning for positive changes to the welfare of sheep, to having absolute trust in the safety of the finished product.
G. Modiano Ltd. fully supports the principles outlined by the IWTO Guidelines for Wool Sheep Welfare and the Dumfries House Declaration.
We believe that all sheep are entitled to a life free of pain, hunger and fear.
Using our best endeavours to source wool that has been produced ethically, we are actively involved in encouraging wool growers not only to increase the supply of such wool but to ensure that the wool they do produce is fully traceable.
We are playing a key role within the industry to advise growers of the changing attitudes of consumers towards animal welfare and we are committed to ensuring that animal rights are respected and upheld.
Our mill, Nejdecka Cesarna Vlny a.s. (NCV), based in the European Union, is held to the most stringent global standards. These cover all areas from employee rights and pay, workplace health and safety, effluent treatment, waste disposal to product safety. We continually invest in machinery, equipment and infrastructure to ensure a safe environment for employees and to minimise our impact on the surrounding environment.
NCV is one of the world's most water-efficient combing mills. All scouring water is cleaned internally by our own effluent treatment plant and the purified water is then recycled back to the scour. There is zero discharge to the river.
We do not allow the use of APEOs or NPEOs, nor do we use or emit other compounds which are harmful to the environment. Our tops, noils and processes are independently and regularly tested.
NCV runs extensive recycling programs. Each by-product from the process is used including metal bale clips, bands and bale packs. Even our organic waste is used in the production of renewable energy.
We are proud of our mill’s EU Ecolabel status, a very robust accreditation managed by the European Commission, which is very challenging to obtain. To qualify for EU Ecolabel we had to demonstrate that all our processes, inputs, outputs, disposal methods, way of treating employees and subcontractors, fulfill special criteria issued by the EU Commission. This is controlled by a government agency acting for the Czech Ministry of the Environment which conducts an initial study of the above and is then entitled to perform checks at any time. The criteria are constantly evolving and NCV must reapply and requalify every four years.

We have also been awarded the highest (Product class 1) OEKO-TEX® 100 certification. OEKO-TEX is an association of independent textile testing institutes working for enhanced product safety and sustainable production in the textile value chain through continuous improvement. Here is a link for more information.
We are certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which certifies wool from the source to final product (View our Certificate).
RWS is a voluntary global standard that addresses the welfare of sheep and of the land they graze on. On farms, the certification ensures that sheep are treated with respect to their Five Freedoms and also ensures best practices in the management and protection of the land. Through the processing stages, certification ensures that wool from certified farms is properly identified and tracked. Here is a link for more information.
